Scabies is a really contagious skin infection. People suffering from scabies experience intense pruritus and have skin full of burrows.
First signs and symptoms of scabies appear after 4 to 6 weeks if it is the first time, 1 to 4 days in already exposed individuals.
It is very important to cure scabies as soon as possible because it can be easily transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. Towels, clothing, bedding are enough to spread it.
Careful washing of clothes is a good way to prevent scabies from spreading, especially if done at high heat.
Actually there is no vaccine for scabies. This is why everyone that has been in close contact with a scabies patient should be treated for prevention. At the same time, a complete cleaning of environment should be considered.
A cure for scabies can be a dose of Ivermectin: it's generally enough to reduce the load of scabies. A second dose may be enough to eliminate it.
Another cure for scabies is topical: Permethrin 5% is probably the best way to go. Scabies sufferers leave it on their skin for around 8-12 hours. It should be applied to the whole body, and this cure should be repeated until rashes disappear.
Alternatives of Permethrin are Eurax (not really a cure, but it helps to relieve pruritis), Neem oil (suggested for those that suffer Permethrin toxicity), tea tree oil, Lindane (best for scabies sufferers where Permethrin has failed - also it is almost side effects free).
